Museums, Galleries and Cultural Spaces

Museums, galleries, visitor centres, and cultural venues are among the most trusted spaces for interpreting place, history, and community.

These spaces hold the stories, artefacts, and artworks that help shape a visitor’s understanding of where they are and who the people are that live there.

Across Southern NSW, cultural venues range from volunteer-run museums and local art spaces to purpose-built regional galleries and libraries. Each plays a vital role in community identity and cultural preservation. Increasingly, these spaces are also evolving into dynamic experience hubs, hosting events, residencies, educational programs, and visitor exhibitions that are co-designed with local communities and creative practitioners.

Tourism operators, councils, and cultural workers can reimagine these spaces as active tourism assets, inviting visitors to explore the richness of local stories and engage in participatory, reflective experiences.

This phase supports and encourages thinking beyond static displays, considering how your museum, gallery, or cultural venue might activate space, stories, and community knowledge in ways that welcome and inspire visitors.

Explore the ‘Getting Started’ section for information on ‘Activating Collections and Cultural Spaces for Visitors’ and ideas, strategies and examples to help you connect your venue or collection with the tourism audience.
