Self Reflection
Tourism operators invest their heart and soul, and often their life savings, into their business. Before you take the leap, take a moment to reflect deeply on what lies ahead. Are you ready for the stress, what exactly do you hope to achieve? Will what you’ve been dreaming about actually deliver what you expect?
- Motivation – What is your motivation for developing this business? What inspires you? The tourism sector is a ‘people’ business, it can be stressful and demanding. It’s important to be clear about what you’re hoping to get out of your business to make sure you’re building a business that’s right for you.
- Goals – What are you hoping to achieve with this venture? Is it financial gain, being your own boss, the sense of achievement that comes with building a business, or a love of people? Make sure your business model supports your goals and is based on realistic assumptions.
- Risks/Opportunity Cost – What will you need to give up to achieve this goal? What risks are you willing to take? How much time and money can you afford to invest? Setting some boundaries up front will keep you from getting yourself ‘in too deep’.
- Exit Plan – How will you exit the business? Do you plan to sell it? Giving this challenging question some thought will help inform the design of your business and ensure you keep your options open.
