Environmental Sustainability

Environmental sustainability focuses on protecting and enhancing the natural environments that support both your business and the visitor experience.

This phase explores practical ways to minimise environmental impacts, improve efficiency, and build climate resilience.

For operators across Southern NSW, caring for the environment means caring for the region’s future. From conserving water and energy to reducing waste and supporting biodiversity, every action contributes to healthier ecosystems and stronger communities. This phase provides tools and examples to help you identify priority areas for improvement and integrate sustainable practices into daily operations.

Reflective questions to get you started:

  • How does your business currently manage its use of energy, water, and materials?
  • What steps can you take to reduce waste and emissions?
  • How could you work with suppliers or visitors to reduce environmental impact?
  • What actions could improve your resilience to climate variability?

This phase draws on Destination NSW’s Sustainable Tourism Resources, the Austrade Sustainable Tourism Toolkit, and the NSW Litter Prevention Strategy (2023–30).

Explore the ‘Understanding and reducing impact’ section to learn more about energy, water, waste, and climate resilience strategies, and to access tools that help measure and monitor your environmental performance.
