Sapphire Coast National Parks Update

NPWS have provided the following information on the status of the Sapphire Coast national parks and park infrastructure, effective 30.1.20.  

In the Sapphire Coast area, early assessments indicate the following key visitor precinct damage and estimated closure periods. Please note that these closure timeframes may be extended once we have undertaken detailed damage assessments and restoration planning.


Currently not impacted but closed due to high fire risk

  • Haycock Point – estimated reopen date 4 or 7 Feb
  • Mimosa National – Park – scheduled to reopen 14 Feb
  • Bournda National Park
  • Day visitation – schedule to reopen 7 Feb
  • Hobart Beach camp – scheduled to reopen 14 Feb


Moderately impacted – estimated closure mid to late Feb 2020

  • Green Cape Lighthouse precinct (day use and overnight accommodation)
  • Disaster Bay Lookout
  • Bittangabee camp ground and day use
  • Saltwater camp ground and day use

Heavily impacted – estimated closure 6 to 10 months

  • Boyd’s Tower: Estimated closure 6 – 10 months
  • Davidson Whaling Station: Estimated closure 6 months
  • Light to Light Walking Track: Estimated closure 6 months – the strategy is to repair and reopen sections of the track in a staged approach, to enable part access the walking tracks, however this cannot be guaranteed until detailed damage assessments have been undertaken.
